45th Infantry Museum Quilt Show a Grand Success

After the Veteran's Day exhibits at Checotah Library, Okeene Library and the 45th Infantry, the Thanking Our Troops--God Bless America Touring Quilts officially ended following a four-year tour. Grown men cried as they read the stories thanking them for their service and they realized that their sacrifices for their country were not in vain.

The 100 donated quilts and Buckboard Quilts entries will continue to be available to exhibit since demand is still vigorous. All other quilts will be returned to the quilt artists with a huge thank you for their contribution to this great cause to provide quilts for wounded soldiers and families of the fallen.

If you have contact information for families of the fallen soldiers, please contact me now so that we may provide a quilt for the mother and wife.

Alma Johnson's colorful 45th Infantry quilt will remain at the 45th Infantry Museum at NE 36th and Eastern in Oklahoma City, OK.

Camp Striker Stables in Baghdad Loved Quilts

Ocboberfest in Caldwell, KS a Blast

We set up 200 patriotic quilts in one hour in the restored Opera House of this delightful farming community on the Chisholm Trail. The bakery sold 200 dozen kolaches by noon hot out of the oven. The aroma was deadly.

Great fun meeting and eating with the charming members of the Loose Threads who put on the show all for charity and for quilts for wounded soldiers. Dee Paddack rode with me the 2 hours up and back in the rain and had several Home of the Brave Memorial Quilt tops for people to sign to be presented to families of the fallen.

This same weekend, the Muncy Historical Museum celebrated the 150th anniversary of the Civil War by exhibiting my circa 1860s quilts included in the Thanking Our Troops--God Bless America Touring Quilts.

Both brought rave reviews as did the QSC Expos Reno, Nv Food for Body and Soul Quilt Exhibit. They sold all 25 1905 Cookbook. Fenley Arts Council exhibited the patriotic quilts the same week-end in Fenley, NV.

Quilted Travel Diary Making Workshop for Altus Teens

July 19 I have the privilege of traveling 3 hours each way to show 10 teenagers at the Altus Library how to make their 22x22" quilted vacation diary of their fave trip. It should be fun. Took all week getting the kits precut and partially sewn with the borders and make the samples. I'll send photos later. Wish me luck.

July 4th Kingfisher Celebration a Blast

Small town America knows how to party! We set up 100 Thanking Our Troops--God Bless America Touring Quilts in the air conditioned (thank goodness) Girl Scout House at the Kingfisher Park. Ninety-three year old Opal Baum and her daughter Ina Smith and Dee Paddack helped me sign books with all profits going for quilts for wounded soldiers and families of the fallen.

Dee sold cooling neckties and survival bracelets for The Hugs Project and had 10 Home of the Brave Quilts that people signed to give to families of the OK fallen soldiers. They loved the exhibit!

Kids had face painting, egg toss games, free swimming in their beautiful new indoor aquatics center and rides on the train and fire engines. They had a big parade, fireworks of course, food booths, art show and a rubber duck race.

I've been shipping out "1905 Cookbook" by the caseloads as it continues to be ordered by cooks, cookbook collectors and for gifts across the nation. All profits go to feed needy children through local church food pantries, orphanages, food banks and homeless shelters.

There is romance and humor in the names, optical illusions, stunning graphics, symmetry in design and vibrant colors.

Quilts are nostalgic, taking us back to a peaceful time. They have a warm and happy feeling. By collecting quilts, you can own a unique and irreplaceable piece of American handiwork that has pride, patience, love and a little bit of history sewn right in. What else can you buy that will decorate a room so dynamically, have value as an antique and American original piece of art and still be affordable.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR Buy quilts in excellent condition, unless you've fallen in love with a spectacular wall hanging, or something of great historic significance. Since you'll be decorating with the quilts, judge them as you would art for graphic design, color~ symmetry and personal appeal. Buy what you love. Look for quality of piecing and hand quilting. Stiches should be even and close.

Signatures, dates or initials greatly enhance the value. The quilt provenance or history should be carefully preserved by typing on muslin and basting on the back of the quilt for it too increases the value dramatically.

Collecting quilts from each decade and of each pattern has become popular and provides an invaluable education. Patchwork quilts like the Double Wedding Ring and Grandmother's Flower Garden are extremely versatile because they're beautiful in any changing color scheme. The simple Nine Patch type country quilt works well in an informal setting, and the appliqués tend to enhance a more formal room.

Spectacular quilts of great graphic design in two colors with distinctive borders make dynamic wall hangings. Lone Stars, Ocean Waves, Trips Around the World, etc, are great patterns on the wall. Try a Lone Star on a table. Red and white and blue and white quilts are favorites for decorating. Good borders frame a quilt like artwork.

WHAT SIZE? Almost any quilt can be used on a twin, full or queen bed. Even working with a small quilt, you can use the length for the width, cover the top fifth of the bed with a coordinating sheet and pillows and use dust ruffles. Generally a 6 1/2" drop will cover the mattress unless it’s a pillow-top mattress. Following are minimal widths or lengths (using the length for the width):

TWIN measures 39"x 74" so 52" covers mattress width.
FULL" 54”x 74" so"67" "
QUEEN" 60"x 80" so"73" "
KING" 78"x 80" so 91" "

Remember that borders and ruffles can be added to increase the size for King. Because the demand for small crib quilts for wall hangings has greatly increased their price, you can effectively use large quilts folded over a rod.

SUMMARY: It’s great fun to collect and switch out quilts for each season for beds, table coverings and wall hangings. It’s the fast and easy way to update and change your décor every three months without the expense of redecorating.

DISPLAY Quilts give a warm, cozy feeling and provide the dynamic inspiration for decorating; whether hung as a work of original art, draped over a sofa or table or beautifully covering your beds.

Always keep quilts out of direct sunlight and away from smoke and air vents. To hang
a quilt, simply baste a double layer casing or sleeve of muslin along the top of quilt, just under the binding and along the bottom of the casing. Slide a rod between the fabric casing and hang the rod on nails in the wall. It's great to change quilt displays from summer to winter, autumn to spring for quick decorating impact and to rest the quilts.

CLEANING: To air musty quilts, spread them out flat in the grass upside down in the shade. Gentle vacuuming with a portable hand-held vacuum removes surface dust or you may shake to remove loose dust. Sunshine will kill mildew and mold.

AVOID DRY CLEANING. To wash quilt, first test for color fastness by wetting a white cloth with water and rubbing some of the bright colors like the reds and yellows. If any color transfers to the white cloth, use one cup of white vinegar in the wash water or use a Dye Grabber Cloth by Carbona. Make any repairs necessary before washing. If fabrics are weak and disintegrating, first seek professional advise. You may need to baste wedding veil tulle over the fragile fabrics. Spot clean before washing.

Hand wash in washing machine or bathtub using Orvus or Quilt Wash and cool soft water on the Gentle Cycle. Gently agitate by hand, turning the machine off during the agitation cycles. Only let the machine add the water and spin it out. Heavily soiled quilts may require extra soaking and rinsings. Dry quilts by spreading flat on the grass on a hot day. If the quilt is thick, flip flop it every couple of hours to dry evenly. Or if you’re afraid the colors might fade on an early quilt, lay it in the shade. The ozone rays of the sun and chlorophyll of the grass will brighten colors. If you have no grass or dogs or it’s wintertime, lay the quilt on the carpet and turn on the ceiling fan or any fan and flip flop it to dry evenly. Always block the quilt out, pulling it to straight edges, and attach weights on corners if it’s windy.

STORAGE Spread all quilts flat out on a guest bed.
Or wrap quilts in washed unbleached muslin or sheet, NEVER PLASTIC, and store in living area of house, never a garage, attic or basement and never on bare wood or in a cardboard box unless it’s acid free. Fold in thirds lengthwise and then loosely roll down from the top. Refold yearly off center with muslin padding under creases so the fold lines don’t weaken the fabric.

A Writer's Vision Literary Symposium

Thanks Lucinda Thierry for inviting me to speak at your Writer’s Vision Literary Symposium September 3rd and 4th in Oklahoma City about my four books and the 300 patriotic touring quilts with all profits going to provide quilts for wounded soldiers and families of the fallen.

Showed a replica of the Civil War Eagle Quilt made in 1862 which is touring with the "Thanking Our Troops--God Bless America Touring Quilts."

And I told the story of VietNam Veteran Jack Hayes I presented the full size reproduction of the Chenoweth Civil War Eagle Quilt to. He carried that quilt in and out of hospitals while he valiantly fought for his life. When the pain became to much to bear, Jack stroked the 3 dimensional eagle's wings as if they gave him courage to rise above his circumstances to higher levels of faith. When his spirits needed lifting, Jack traced the "Thank you Jack for your service" embroidered in the center of the quilt and realized that his sacrifice for his country was not in vain but documented in this tangible memorial.

Jack was wrapped in his beloved quilt when he was carried up on eagle's wings to even greater heights right into his loving heavenly Father's arms to receive his final reward--the shiny stars in his golden crowns.

Networked with lots of great African American authors & self-publishers. I salute the Dream Team for their community involvement in literacy awareness. Great fun & food and educational!

Congratulations Joan Ballew for her Judge's Choice Award
Congratulations Joan Ballew for her Judge's Choice Award at the Edmond Quilt Show. It was her quilted portrait of her Marine son Logan who received quilts for wounded soldiers when he almost died in Iraq.Joan's 22" Portrait Quilt is one of 300 of our "Thanking Our Troops--God Bless America Touring Quilts" that are crisscrossing America with all profits from the books and $100 exhibit rental fees going to nonprofits who make quilts for wounded soldiers and families of the fallen.We've sent thousands of dollars to Home of the Brave, The Hugs Project, etc. to Thank Our Troops in this worthwhile project. WPA Cushing Library Program & Quilt Show
I've never had to go up one level by elevator and down another level by another elevator, through the hall, with so many turns to find the auditorium in all my life. I made this trip 6 times hauling three 50 gallon tubs of quilts, nine 10' poles, four 7' poles, racks, bases and 50 lbs of books. It was a challenge to this directionally challenged half-wit. But I made it and got the quilt show set up on time to a very receptive audience who kept me there until 8:30. I didn't get home til 10pm.I showed my 1936 sampler quilt made in a WPA Sewing Room where the women made 50 cents/day in this WPA built library.Love these trips to visit with the friendly rural people. They're so welcoming and receptive even though it can be exhausting.

Indoor Fireworks to Celebrate Quilt Exhibit & Program
Way to celebrate July 4th with a bang at the Baptist Retirement Center in Oklahoma City, OK where I presented a Centennial Quilt Trunk Show Program and exhibit of 22" patriotic quilts from our "Thanking Our Troops--God Bless America Touring Quilts."What a surprise when the indoor fireworks started popping! And what a treat to sample the fresh peach and blackberry cobbler at the indoor picnic.I thought I'd die when one sweet lady bent over to read the quilt label and her blackberry cobbler went flying off her tray right onto a white quilt. Fortunately all the stain came out. You never know what can happen when you get a bunch of exuberant white hairs together celebrating. Great fun--full of surprises!!!

Beaver Oklahoma Children's Quilt Program & Patriotic Exhibit
Traveled 4 hours to the Panhandle of Oklahoma to give a children's program "Under the Cover with Grannie Reveals Oklahoma's Secrets" and patriotic "Thanking Our Troops--God Bless America Touring Quilts Exhibit." Children from 3-16 years old sat on the floor and quilters from 60 miles away crowded in to see. Included was one 94 year old quilter who had come the furthest and shared stories about the Great Depression and Dust Bowl Days on the farm.Great fun. They want me to return to give a quilt trunk show program for the quilters.

WPA Cushing Library Program & Quilt Show

I've never had to go up one level by elevator and down another level by another elevator, through the hall, with so many turns to find the auditorium in all my life. I made this trip 6 times hauling three 50 gallon tubs of quilts, nine 10' poles, four 7' poles, racks, bases and 50 lbs of books. It was a challenge to this directionally challenged half-wit. But I made it and got the quilt show set up on time to a very receptive audience who kept me there until 8:30. I didn't get home til 10pm.

I showed my 1936 sampler quilt made in a WPA Sewing Room where the women made 50 cents/day in this WPA built library.

Love these trips to visit with the friendly rural people. They're so welcoming and receptive even though it can be exhausting.

Way to celebrate July 4th with a bang at the Baptist Retirement Center in Oklahoma City, OK where I presented a Centennial Quilt Trunk Show Program and exhibit of 22" patriotic quilts from our "Thanking Our Troops--God Bless America Touring Quilts."

What a surprise when the indoor fireworks started popping! And what a treat to sample the fresh peach and blackberry cobbler at the indoor picnic.

I thought I'd die when one sweet lady bent over to read the quilt label and her blackberry cobbler went flying off her tray right onto a white quilt. Fortunately all the stain came out. You never know what can happen when you get a bunch of exuberant white hairs together celebrating. Great fun--full of surprises!!!

Beaver Oklahoma Children's Quilt Program & Patriotic Exhibit

Traveled 4 hours to the Panhandle of Oklahoma to give a children's program "Under the Cover with Grannie Reveals Oklahoma's Secrets" and patriotic "Thanking Our Troops--God Bless America Touring Quilts Exhibit." Children from 3-16 years old sat on the floor and quilters from 60 miles away crowded in to see. Included was one 94 year old quilter who had come the furthest and shared stories about the Great Depression and Dust Bowl Days on the farm.

Great fun. They want me to return to give a quilt trunk show program for the quilters.

This is the greeting sewn on the back of the quilt that Staff Sergeant Logan Ballew received upon arriving at the Bethesda Military Hospital in August of 2006. While disarming a roadside bomb in Iraq, Logan received the impact of the exploding bomb. The local military hospital personnel waited to notify Logan’s parents for three days, not knowing whether they would be sending the boy back home in a body bag or to a hospital.

Edmond resident Jack Hayes was setting up a cannon to defend an airstrip when North Vietnam Regulars burst from the rubber trees twenty feet away, guns blazing. Jack spun around and returned fire before a bullet from an AK47 pierced his stomach and exited through his back. Medevac airlifted Jack to the Saigon Field Hospital where officials quickly honored Jack by pinning on his uniform a Purple Heart, Bronze Star and V for valor. Then they ceremoniously pulled a sheet over his head pronouncing Jack Hayes dead.

Only by God’s grace did Jack survive that injury which fractured his back, and the Agent Orange that poisoned his organs. During the ensuing years he underwent thirty-five major abdominal operations to remove his stomach, appendix and gall bladder, and endured countless complications. Nonetheless, Jack still radiates the joy of the Lord and praises Him each morning for the blessing of life.

For his last birthday October 17, 2008, I presented Jack with a replica of a Civil War quilt with an appliqué of an American eagle holding an olive branch in its beak. Mary Chenoweth, great-great-great grandmother of Kristen Chenoweth, created an eagle quilt top for her son Benjamin Franklin Chenoweth after he left for war in 1862. She prayed that he would return home safely and for peace in America with every stitch she took.

Benjamin brought his cherished quilt top, his wife and sons and their families from Missouri in a covered wagon caravan to join the Oklahoma Land Run of 1889. They homesteaded farms near Hinton in Indian Territory. Benjamin’s wife and daughters in-law quilted the top with their names, dates and family history documented in the threads for future generations.

That Civil War eagle quilt, which recently appraised for $8,000 to $12,000, now adorns the cover of Oklahoma Heritage Quilts, and I featured it in my Centennial Stitches—Oklahoma History in Quilts book. I made a smaller version of the quilt to tour with the God Bless America Touring Quilts that benefits our soldiers. A reproduction of that Civil War Eagle quilt made by Connie Heffron, a Chenoweth cousin hangs behind me in the photo.

When Jack received his appliquéd eagle, he cried at the thought that someone would take the time to express gratitude for his military service. The quilt follows him in and out of the hospital as he valiantly fights for his life. “Jack curls up in his colorful red, gold and green quilt for comfort,” his wife Sue shared. When the pain becomes too intense to bear, he strokes the trapunto three-dimensional wings as if the eagle gives him energy to soar to a higher level of faith. When Jack’s spirits need lifting, he traces the quilt’s embroidered “Thank You Jack” with his fingers and realizes that his suffering for his country was not in vain, but documented in this tangible memorial.

Jack delights in telling the history behind his quilt. To him, the mighty eagle is the personification of American freedom, strength and bravery. When asked how he has survived the last forty-one years, Jack answers, “When storms and tragedy strike our lives, we can decide to be like a rooster who hides wet and shivering in the corner of the henhouse, and eventually dies. Or, we can rise above the storm on wings of an eagle to soar to new heights. I’ve chosen to live each day through God’s promised strength like the eagle.”

Jack loves to remind his family and friends that we have the power to choose whether we live in freedom or captivity; to live triumphantly or in hopelessness and defeated by our circumstances. Jack recounts the story of the boy who tried to test the wise old man by capturing a tiny sparrow in his hands. The boy held his cupped hands out to the old man and asked, “What do I hold in my hands?” Said the wise old man, “It appears that you have a tiny bird.”

Hoping to trick the old man, the young lad asked, “Is it alive or dead?” The lad planned to prove the old man wrong by crushing the bird if he guessed it was alive, or releasing the bird to fly away if he said it was dead.

Quilts for Wounded Troops

“Like a mother's loving arms, this quilt is our hug for our hero—a gift of thanks for protecting America. It expresses our gratitude, love, respect, and honor to forever hold and comfort you."

This is the greeting sewn on the back of the quilt that Staff Sergeant Logan Ballew of Norman, OK received upon arriving at the Bethesda Military Hospital in August of 2006.

Disarming a roadside bomb in Iraq, Logan Ballew received the impact of the bomb when it exploded. The local military hospital personnel feared Logan might die. They waited three days to notify Logan’s parents, not knowing whether they would be sending him back home in a body bag or to a hospital.

Logan arrived two days later in Bethesda where a quilt made by a Quilts of Valor volunteer welcomed him. Arnold and Joan Ballew flew from Edmond, Oklahoma to Bethesda to keep bedside vigil.

Marine Mom Joan had made many quilts through Quilts for Injured Soldiers. “We created these quilts as ‘Hugs for Our Heroes’ to give them hope and peace for their road ahead. A little piece of me goes out with each quilt I make,” Joan explained. Joan’s reward for her many hours of volunteer work comes from the Thank Yous received from wounded soldiers like this one: “When I get scared with the memories of war, I curl up in my quilt and the nightmares go away. It makes me proud to be a soldier, knowing Americans really care. There’s so much love and a prayer in every stitch.”

One of the first questions Joan asked Logan was if he had received a quilt. When Joan asked what he thought of the gift, Logan expressed how humbled, honored, and encouraged he felt to receive such a treasure. “ It was a source of strength and comfort that lifted my spirits and warmed my heart. I knew my service was appreciated and not in vain.”

Joan excitedly unfolded Logan’s bright quilt and caressed the stitches of comfort some volunteer quilter had lovingly taken. When Joan emailed the guild to thank them, she instantly bonded with the woman who made Logan’s quilt. “She became my new buddy when I most needed a friend to share my feelings of loneliness and fear while sitting at my son’s bedside.”

After fourteen months of painful physical therapy, progressing from wheel chair to walker to cane, Logan now walks with a slight limp with the help of a leg brace. Permanent nerve damage in his leg shattered Logan’s career dreams of spending his life in the Marines. When he gets discouraged, Logan finds comfort and hope for his future by snuggling up in his quilted hug. Logan is now adjusting well to civilian life with his part-time job in cabinetry in Norman, Oklahoma.

Joan’s 22” portrait quilt of her marine son, using the zipper, fabric and buttons from his uniform, won a blue ribbon in Buckboard Quilts' God Bless America Quilt Exhibit which is touring the U.S. for three years with profits going to provide more of these healing quilts for soldiers.

Memorial Quilts for Families of Fallen Troops

Independence Quilt Comforts Soldiers in Iraq
As the nation celebrated Memorial Day and July 4th with bands and parades, Kaye Vicars Hansen, State Coordinator for the Oregon Home of the Brave Quilt Project, was stitching comforting commemorative quilts for families of U.S. soldiers killed in action.
In 2005, Kay’s brother Don Vicars volunteered to serve in Iraq to train the Iraqi police officers. Don sent photos of his new quarters, with a glimpse of the dismal blanket on his bed. Immediately, Kay felt compelled to create a colorful quilt to make his new surroundings feel more like home. But to overcome this tough ex-marine’s protests, she suggested he use the quilt until he came home and then pass it on to other soldiers in Iraq until the mission was completed, in that way reminding each man that we’re grateful for their service and covering them in prayers.
Kay sent a blank journal along with the quilt, asking those who slept beneath this blanket of love to write about themselves in the journal. Don awoke Christmas Eve morning with the name of the ideal recipient of the quilt—Gunny Larry Sizemore, a retired Marine and decorated Viet Nam veteran, the Supervisor in charge of The Stables. Camp Striker Stables in Bagdad, Iraq offers a sanctuary for the weary, a place of rest for the tired, and a touch of home away from home for U.S. and Coalition forces.
Kaye’s “comforter” now adorns one of the couches waiting to cheer and warm our troops far from home and missing their loved ones. Every American soldier, press or dignitary who passes through the Stables take turns wrapping up in Kaye’s quilted stars and stripes. As the daughter of a proud Marine veteran, Kaye is honored that her Independence quilt takes a little piece of her where she cannot go to touch lives a world away to comfort and reassure each soldier of our deepest support and gratitude for their dedicated service in the name of freedom and Independence for all.
On behalf of the Oregon Chapters of The Hugs Project and The Home of the Brave Quilt Project, Kaye recently received a donation of $1000 from advance profits from Buckboard Quilts’ God Bless America Quilt Exhibit that is touring the U.S. for three years to benefit troops and help heal our torn nation.
Kaye submitted a 22” quilt entry for the GBA exhibit replicating her Independence Quilt and also a miniature of the 48”x84” memorial quilts created by HOTB volunteers. Started in 2004 by Don Beld of Redland, California, HOTB quilts replicate the Civil War-era bedroll quilts given to wounded soldiers by the U.S. Sanitary Commission, now known as the Red Cross. Kaye’s quilts were included in the GBA exhibit that recently cheered troops at Camp Striker Stables.

What an honor to receive this e-mail from retired Gunnery Sgt. Sizemore. I sponsored the God Bless America Quilt Contest and Exhibits which are touring the nation for three years. The project pays tribute to our brave military heroes, helps mend our torn country and inspires patriotism. It was my objective to donate all profits from the $100 exhibit rental fees–which are free to military and veterans groups–to supply batting and fabric for the volunteers who provide quilt to wounded soldiers. I had no idea the exhibit would travel all the way to the battlefront.
Gunny went on to share that some of the men stayed for hours examining the quilts and taking pictures of themselves posed in front of the display. They loved reading the accompanying stories which thanked them for their service. Many soldiers shared their own foxhole tales, or the heroic acts of fathers and grandfathers who served in Vietnam and WWII. One colonel and several others even shed tears as the quilts evoked memories of our brave troops and lost loved ones. The VIPs thought it was a wonderful gift of heart-warming patchwork.
Since Camp Striker had been a 45th Infantry Division, Alma Johnson’s bold red and gold “Thunderbird” quilt touched the hearts of the artillery soldiers. By creating quilts to donate as fund-raisers for the veterans groups, this Chickasaw Native American from Shawnee, Oklahoma, honors many 45th Infantry veterans such as her husband and grandfather.
Gunny placed the POW flag above the “Peace Be With You” quilt made by Robin Corvin of Oklahoma City, and “Praying Hands” quilt by Barbara Freed of Okeene, Oklahoma. Kaye Hansen’s 22 inch copy of the full-sized “Independence Quilt,” which she made to permanently comfort the troops at the Stables, also told about her “Home of the Brave” quilts. These memorial quilts are gifted to the families of the fallen troops and replicate the 1860s bedroll quilts issued to Civil War soldiers.

When Gunny returned the God Bless America Quilt Exhibit, he included a surprise for me—a United States flag that had been flown in my honor over Camp Striker Baghdad, February 12, 2009. With it was a signed certificate authenticating the honor, along with commemorative coins from the Marines and Navy for Operation Iraqi Freedom. I’ve never felt so overwhelmed or humbled by such a gracious thank-you gift. When Gunny returned the God Bless America Quilt Exhibit, he included a surprise for me—a United States flag that had been flown in my honor over Camp Striker Baghdad, February 12, 2009. With it was a signed certificate authenticating the honor, along with commemorative coins from the Marines and Navy for Operation Iraqi Freedom. I’ve never felt so overwhelmed or humbled by such a gracious thank-you gift.
